The loosehead prop Fabien Barcella, who was a surprise addition to the France World Cup squad after battling for fitness following a serious injury, has been named to start his country's opening match in the tournament against Japan on Saturday.

Barcella ruptured his Achilles tendon in August last year and, though he played in France's 26-22 victory over Ireland in a warm-up Test last month, he looked off the pace and was a surprise inclusion in the World Cup squad at the expense of the experienced Sylvain Marconnet.

The coach, Marc Lièvremont, also named Aurélien Rougerie in the side to face Japan at North Harbour Stadium in Albany despite the centre breaking his ankle three months ago, though he did play in France's build-up matches last month.

Lièvremont has also given the scrum-half Dimitri Yachvili the opportunity to establish himself as first choice over Morgan Parra.

Parra has been a mainstay in Lievremont's line-up but Lièvremont said on Tuesday that Yachvili "is in fine form" and that his excellent performance against Ireland last month weighed in his favour.

The No8 Raphael Lakafia, who made his debut against Ireland last month, forms a loose forward trio with Imanol Harinordoquy and the captain, Thierry Dusautoir.

Scotland have won their last six fixtures against Romania, scoring an average of 45.8 points per game.

These sides met at the 2007 Rugby World Cup and Scotland recorded a six try 42-0 win.

That 42-0 win was the only time in Scotland’s last 12 RWC matches that they have managed to prevent the opposition from scoring at least 10 points.

Scotland have scored 899 points in their World Cup history and are one of just five sides to have scored over 100 tries (109).

A Scottish flanker has scored a hat-trick in both of the two previous World Cup meetings between these sides, John Jeffrey in 1987 and Ally Hogg in 2007.

Rory Lamont crossed for four tries in his four World Cup appearances in 2007.

Perpignan hooker, Marius Tincu, has notched up three tries in just four World Cup appearances and is Romania’s leading scoring in the competition’s history.

Romania have never emerged from the pool stages of a RWC but they have recorded five wins from their 20 games, including a memorable 17-15 win over Fiji in 1991.
